Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brasília.
