Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology in 2025.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain calls made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
